About

So what is Green with Purpose? (Also known as an About page.)

Hey, you want to know more about me! I’m (kind of) thrilled.

My name is Mickey and I started this website in 2018. Back then, there weren’t a lot of independent blogs writing about houseplants. How things have changed!

At the time I started the website, I had already been growing plants for more than ten years and had taken several courses on how to keep them happy. But I just didn’t find the information accessible or presented in a non-academic language. So I figured that if I had that problem, so did other people.

I was also noticing that a lot of my millennial friends were getting into plant-keeping, but weren’t particularly attracted to grandma’s gardening bulletin or our mothers’ copies of Better Homes and Gardens. And from an esthetic point of view, we just couldn’t relate to having lush plants soaking up the sun in bay windows or on spacious verandas and conservatories. We’re apartment dwellers who still love to get our nature fix. We’d love to have full swatches of garden to tickle our green thumbs, but right now all we have is windowsills or that living room corner where the Ikea Poang used to live before it was replaced by a monstera.

So in addition to plant advice, I also started writing about designs suitable for keeping plants in small places. And about how to incorporate plants into our busy lives.

Nowadays, I also write about gardening (which I also do in a small suburban space). You’ll also find posts about how my other interests, such as literature, art and sustainability, connect with the world of houseplants and gardening.

If all that sounds appealing, the best way to keep in touch is to follow me on Instagram. I post mostly about plants, although sometimes my cat will make a cameo.

I don’t work on this site full time, but I do write about plants and gardening professionally for other websites, such as Blooming Backyard and Rural Sprout.

Another way to keep in touch is to subscribe to my newsletter. I’ll send you about one email a month with my latest blog posts. But I must confess that nowadays the emails will be quite sporadic.

If you’d like to get in touch, you can message me via Instagram.
